Some Thoughts – The Cross of Jesus

I don’t think that I would be here today and be a disciple of Jesus if it was not for one man powerfully used by God. This Sunday in church we will be viewing what possibly may be his last address. You may have heard of him – Dr Billy Graham. Literally hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe have come to radical faith through this one man’s preaching, predominantly on one central message: The cross of Jesus and the good news of salvation.

My mum gave her life to Jesus in the late 1950’s at a Billy Graham rally here in Sydney. She met my dad at a mission outreach at Kings Cross not long after, and led my dad to faith in Jesus that night. They become radical disciples of Jesus, got married, had two sons, became missionaries in Italy for 30 years, planted 5 churches, and led thousands to radical salvation in Jesus Christ. And here I am.

The cross of Jesus is the centrepiece of our Christian faith. We, men and women from all the ends of the globe are sinners and desperately need a Saviour and Lord in our lives. God, who is amazingly loving, allowed the sacrifice of His one and only son Jesus, for the propitiation and redemption of mankind. Your life for His. The cross that is offensive so many, is the pivotal centre of HIS-STORY. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(John 3:16). What love! What grace! What a price! What a relationship!  I, a wicked sinner separated from a Holy, creator God, have been reconciled, redeemed and forgiven. I am a new creation. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor 5:17). I am truly overwhelmed every time I stop and consider that I am who I am today, and I have what I have because of the blood My Jesus shed on the cross. Today I am alive, I have purpose and I have a future because of His death and, even more importantly, His resurrection.

I urge you once again to rediscover the cross of Jesus and worship Him who is risen from the grave! Your life has meaning, identity and purpose, you are loved, victorious and powerful because of Jesus death and resurrection. You are free. You are a son and daughter of the living Jesus Christ. Live now to the fullest!

Make it relevant –  The Cross and Me

1. Why not stop on a regular basis just to fall at His feet, and acknowledge the amazing price Jesus paid to give you your life back. Tell Jesus what the cross means to you today, make it real for you.
2. Use your words, worship, prayer and anything else to regularly talk with Jesus and simply say: THANK YOU!
3. Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you that, through a spirit of amazing gratitude, you may start to share the good news of Jesus with those around you and share how the cross transformed your life.
4. Remember that through Jesus, you have direct access to the Father.
5. Every time you may have a bad day or experience some discouragement or disappointments, remember that you now live in the finished work of the cross in the power of his resurrection. You are made to be alive and live life to the fullest!
